An excellent big band arrangement of Oliver Nelson's classic album from the sixties. Financed and produced by Dave and Judith O'Higgins this is a labour of love project of one of their most cherished albums. Assembling an excellent band of British musicians including alt sax man Sammy Mayne and trumpeter Henry Armburg-Jennings they breath fresh life into an all time jazz classic.

The ensemble playing is on the money with the melodies given the full and mighty force of the big band. The solos, especially from O'Higgins on tenor and soprano and Sammy Mayne on alto are first class. Mayne really excels here with some keening Dolphy'ish solos that bite through the big band sound. There are also solo contributions from Armburg Jennings on trumpet, Mark Nightingale on trombone and Mrs O'Higgins on tenor saxophone.

One effective twist is to have the whole ensemble play some of the Hubbard and Dolphy solos transcribed from the original album and in doing so add a new but familiar dimension.
The arrangements are excellent, the sound is crisp and clear with the mix just about right.

An excellent album and one worthy of your on going support for British jazz.
